Overview

This guide goes through the steps we used to wash our wheels and tires. Just as with most things, there are more than one way to wash wheels - this is the method we have evolved to after a number of years of testing various products and methods. This method is a balance between quickness, protection of the wheels and how well the finish looks.

When washing any surface that you do not want to scratch, the goal is to loosen and remove the dirt without pushing the dirt against the finished surface. It is the pressure of the dirt against the finished surface that cause scratches, much the same as sand paper against paint or wood. These scratches can range from light marring to deeper scratches - all causing an undesirable finish to the surface.

Procedure Used

1. Before any wash, we always check that the surfaces to be washed are not hot and are not in direct sunlight. Not doing this can cause the water and chemicals to dry prematurely - significantly increasing the chances of water spots or other undesired effects.
2. First, we filled a bucket (with grit gaurd) with water and a squirt of Adam's Car Shampoo. We let the wheel woolie, wheel and lug brush and wheel wash mitt soak in the bucket.
3. Before rinsing with water, we sprayed the wheels liberally with the Tuga wheel cleaner. Be sure to spray the wheel cleaner on the face of the wheel, inside the wheel and on the calipers. Try to avoid directly spraying the brake rotors. Porsche 911 (991.1) with Tuga Wheel Cleaner
4. After 2 - 5 minutes, we used the wheel woolie to wash the inner parts of the wheel - focusing on getting all of the brake dust and debris loose. We also thoroughly washed the brake caliper. Throughout the wash process, never apply too much pressure to the surface, since doing this will likely lead to scratches. We rinsed and loaded the wheel woolie with soap from the bucket multiple times during this process. Remember, the goal is to loosen and remove dirt without scratching the surface finishes. 5. Next, we used the wheel and lug brush to clean inside and around the lug nuts.
6. Using the dedicated wheel wash mitt, we washed the face and spokes of the wheel. We tried to get all the way around each of the spokes and even the backside of the spokes. Remember to rinse the wheel wash mitt to remove dirt and then reload with soap from the bucket.
7. With the wheel washed, we sprayed tire & rubber cleaner on sidewall of the tire. We use the tire brush to scrub the tires to work with the tire & rubber cleaner to loosen the grime. There should be some bubbles and discoloration of the tire cleaner - this is not well shown in the photo. 8. Finally, we used the tire brush and/or wheel woolie to scrub the inner wheel well. Using a Wheel Woolie and Adam's Polishes Tire and Rubber Cleaner to clean Porsche 911 (991.1) wheel wells
9. Using the pressure washer gun with a 40° nozzle, we rinsed off the wheel well, tire, caliper and wheel. Be sure to remove all soap and dirt. Rinsing Porsche 911 (991.1) wheels
10. With the wheel still wet, we sprayed CarPro Hydro2 on the wheel and caliper. Using the pressure washer gun with a 40° nozzle, we immediately rinsed off the CarPro Hydro2. This is the beauty of CarPro Hydro2, it does not require any wiping. CarPro Hydro2 is a silica sealant that will protect the wheels for 1-2 months. 11. We repeated all of the above steps on the rest of the wheels and tires.
12. If you are washing the entire car, skip this step until the entire car has been washed. Next, we used a battery powered blower and a general purpose microfiber towel to dry the wheels. We also like to use a drying aid, such as AMMO Hydrate, especially when drying painted wheels.
13. Again, if you are washing the entire car, skip this step until the entire car has been washed. With the tires reasonably dry, we applied CarPro PERL to the sidewall of the tires, for a deep, satin black finish. If possible, we also apply some CarPro PERL to the plastic of the wheel wells. 14. Next, we washed the rest of the car. To see how we do this, check out our Maintenance Wash Guide.
